Winter Activities....... Bird Watching and Deer Watching on site.
![]() |
In the winter,it
is not uncommon to have groups of 3, 5, 7, or 11 deer at our back door,
bathed in the soft Christmas tree lights at dusk , always an "odd
number" for some "odd reason ", nibbling on left overs
from the bird feeders.

| Bird Watchers are welcome! Enjoy a complimentary copy of " Birds of Algonquin Park" and an identification "Checklist of Birds of Algonquin Park " to take home. Algonquin Park has recorded 260 kinds of birds. Christmas bird count include red crossbill, white winged crossbill, pine grosbeak, common redpoll, both golden eagle and bald eagle, .....Chickadees, nuthatch, and bluejays are daily visitors to our feeders. The ruffed grouse is a year round resident. Ravens scour the forest for animal carcasses. Sightings of barred owl swooping for deer mice near the feeder and pileated woodpecker undulating high over the forest with its loud ringing call have been reported. A huge flock of hooded mergansers dipped and displayed their formal black and white colours in an aqua ballet performed in front of the boathouse just before the ice formed in December. | ||

Woodland Springs has hiking trails on 40 private acres, 6 acres per guest , for ecological exploration and photo shoots. Forty acres of managed silviculture woodlot , on rolling land with granite ridges , supports a variety of flora and fauna - sugar and red maple, paper white, yellow, and black birch, white pine, hemlock, and cedar. White trillium, yellow dog tooth violets, and a sea of blue forget-me-nots blanket the woods in spring. A surprising ruins garden, near an old lilac stand, hints of a bygone farmstead now naturalized back to forest. |

Fauna
sightings include raccoon, porcupine, and fox in addition to resident "blue
heron", loon, duck, mink, beaver and deer. Deer follow the springs
to the lake and snack at our back door on bird feed , alfalfa and cedar.

"Gaye and George, Thank you
very much for the beautiful fall weekend away - nice to get away from
the city and be pampered. The food was amazing. I will have memories of
the Apple Pan Dowdy forever!!! We loved the canoeing around the lake and
hanging out with Muff -the 15 year old puppy!!" "The boat trip with George
was something that couldn't be missed with all the local stories and we
truly appreciated the hospitality of you both. We have had a wonderful
time for this one day - we're very sorry it wasn't longer {but next time
it will be}. Gaye's breakfast serving was {as I'm sure she is constantly
told} phenonomal."
"We thought if it is only
half as good as its picture on the web we would be happy with Woodland
Springs . It was even better than the picture! Three peaceful days spent
here exploring Algonquin, canoeing Penlake, experiencing breakfast on
the "perch" was blissful especially after a successful marriage
proposal on top of the CN tower. Leaving behind a CD of the new British
Frank Sinatra will remind Gaye and George of our appreciation for our
stay in Canada. We had a lovely time." "Dear Gaye and George, The
holiday was amazing. The breakfast was SO GOOD! The view was great and
the fishing was awesome. 40 rock bass,1 perch,1 large mouth bass all in
an evening from the dock. You were so nice and the place is beautiful.
I really liked the boat rides.... Thank you for having us for a week.
Hope to be back soon with 2 more." "Mr and Mrs Musselman ......Glad
that we could visit you the fourth time and you just make us want to come
back more! Were Keigo and Muff ever happy on the boat ride. Keigo will
take a swimming lesson in the future so that he can ride more often. He
looks so cute in his life jacket! Thanks for making our visit special. You
did it again. My grandmother and grandfather from Japan enjoyed themselves
very much also. Grandmother is hunting for English china and my grandfather
can't stop talking about the boat ride!" |
