Kindred Spirit's Group- Kempenfelt Quliters Guild at Woodland Springs Penlake B&B Retreat
These women have been quilting from 10-30 years which averages 2 to 5 quilting projects each, yearly, totalling well over 300 quilts. Their skilled backgrounds include painting on porcelain, needlework, tailoring clothes, painting and sculpting and a fascination with the history of quilts reflected in the technology ,materials and lifestyles of the past. Mary remembers a Grandma Slater's house, jam packed with materials and quilters gathered, exuding an energy that created a lasting impression on her.
Chris is fascinated with the history of quilts that oftentimes reflected important historical happenings. During the civil war quilts denoted a safe house for slaves escaping to Canada in the Underground Railway by displaying on porch railings or clotheslines, a coded message to escapees. A log cabin style quilt with a black centre rather than the usual red centre meant a "safe house". A wagon wheel quilt meant "get packing".
Some in the group are
still "seeking a specialty" like Barb, but Chris and Wendy are experts with detailed applique, a technique that surprisingly transforms material, thread and needle into artistic masterpieces. Wendy recalls now in amusement, when she was shopping for the material for her first quilt, how she insisted everything absolutely match. That was an indication of her inexperience.
The feel of the fabric and the quantities of unending possibilities with scrappy quilts is Mary's forte. Piecing in a serendipity fashion with colour selections 'as in nature' gives Heather a satisfaction with patterning. Kim's and Sherry 's forte is using their quilts to create relationships with others and making quilting a part of their friend's lives too.

Quilting Myths Dispelled by "The Kindred Spirits"

1.Quilting is usually done by Grandmothers..NOT Age range can be from 8 to 88 says Wendy

2. You have to be skilled to be in a guild ...NOT Skill level does not affect inclusion says Chris

3.Everthing must match exactly .................NOT Serendipity -'as in nature''is best says Heather

4.Quilting is so expensive ..........................NOT Creativity with scraps can be economical says Mary

5.Quilting is isolating .................................NOT Friendship bonds in a guild grow like a
patterned quilt and these have affected our quilting styles and have expanded our horizons, Joining a guild with a friend or sister guarantees quality time together says Kim and Sherry.

6.Quilting is insignificant ........................NOT Barb urges all to label everything and keep a journal for family history. Kim and Sherry make commemorative quilt hangings for sporting events, graduations, promotions rather than sending a card which gets easily discarded and forgotten.
Quilts warm the home with caring and passion says Mary and just snuggling in one is like a "special emotional hug."

Woodland Springs Quilting Instructor SYLVIA.

Each Latvian patch made by her students in the rural community of Merdzene where she was teaching women to quilt, was a souvenir of her 2 month stay. As Sylvia explained in the autumn issue of The Canadian Quilter, she went to Latvia as a Volunteer Advisor with the Canadian not for profit organization CESO.2003 "First, I taught them to use a rotary cutter - they had never seen such a thing. Next, I had them making a half centimetre seam allowance, and then we started in on a full size quilt."

"You and your friends may feel it is your cottage too, with timeless weekends just to quilt." "Provided spring and fall are: ample work spaces catching the natural light from rows of quilt size windows lakeside, hours and hours of individualized instruction from award winning quilters, quilt supply shopping in Huntsville,......." Woodland Springs has 48 ft. of lakeside windows with 24 ft. of table space.

"The quilts throughout the house represent a wide range of style and history. On most beds are serviceable blue cotton quilts with flannel batting, hand stitched in the 1920's. An ivory and rose Drunkard's Path -a wedding gift made in the 60's- still graces a pineapple style double bed on the second floor. On the 4 poster cherry bed lies a maize and green "sunflower " quilt from the 30's. This was a quilter's first attempt and was kept in a box for over 50 years -too precious for daily use ."....................On a honey maple bed lies a poppy flower quilt made from a kit from the 80's, startling in its contrast of scarlet, red and tawny orange tones on white background. The Tree of Life quilt "Norm's quilt" was carefully appliquéd daily by my mother after visiting Norm, my father in hospital for over a period of a year. The comfort in creating something beautiful to be passed on to the family eased the pain of saying good-bye daily.................

QUILTING RETREAT WITH CAROLINE BERCH - October 2002

Thanks for a wonderful weekend. I'll send you a photo of the finished quilt as soon as its done. Please consider more weekends for quilters. Thanks so much for your note and the wonderful recipes. I'm sorry I took so long to acknowledge it. I've been in a bit of a quilting frenzy lately! I think the weekend away was more than just a little R&R - it seemed to reaffirm not only my interest, but my abilities in quilting. Caroline was a most inspiring teacher and you and George have a lot to be proud of in your hospitality and such a beautiful home. I finished the autumn leaves wallhanging, and made a miniature version containing 25 3" leaves with all the leftover fabric (plus another quick trip to the quilt shop for the wonderful brown background fabric!). The metallic thread quilting lines give the illusion of blowing breezes. It was a successful project for my first attempt at machine quilting - and so fast! The larger wallhanging from our weekend with you will be donated to Carol Miller's Stratford quilt auction. From all of us, thanks for a most memorable weekend. I'll be pleased to share your advertisement for Woodland Springs quilt weekends in our guild newsletter. P.S.Woodland Springs lemon carrot cloud cake in Chef Pam Steel's book 'Great Canadian Baking' is on my menu for our traditional Christmas Eve family dinner, which I've been hosting for about 10 years. Thank you! Linda Hruska, Mt.Forest
